Faculty of Maritime Studies in Split

As a constituent unit of the University of Split, the Faculty of Maritime Studies is a public higher education institution that has been organising and performing university studies as well as professional and scientific activities in the area of maritime affairs and shipping. The present-day institution was established by merging Maritime College in Split (founded in 1959) with the Maritime Systems and Processes Study of the University of Split Department of Sea and Shipping.

Higher maritime education in Split institutions has followed the development of the Split's and Croatia's maritime economy with the aim of forming high-quality staff demanded by the various branches of the maritime market. Now more than 50 years old, the Faculty of Maritime Studies has experienced a number of formal, organisational, structural and functional changes resulting primarily from the rapid growth of the national and international maritime economies.

Since 2000 Bureau Veritas and the Croatian Register of Shipping have certified Faculty of Maritime Studies in compliance with the ISO 9002 quality standards for higher education and training, scientific and professional work, and publishing activities. Owing to its quality assurance and safety at work policies the Faculty has been certified to ISO 9001:2008 and OHSAS 18001:2007 standards.

Obrazovanje i izobrazba usuglašeni su s međunarodnom konvencijom STCW (International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) i IMO ( International Maritime Organization) propisima.

The provided education and training programmes comply with the requirements of STCW convention (International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers), IMO (International Maritime Organization) regulations and The Regulation on Requirements for the Award of Ranks and Certification of Seafarers aboard Croatian merchant ships.

According to the Bologna declaration principles the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Split has embraced a continuing modernisation of studying and has established undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate doctoral university studies. The study programmes belong to the area of Technical Sciences, the field of Traffic and Transport Technology, the discipline of Maritime and River Transport.

  1. undergraduate level, and
  2. graduate level.

 

Undergraduate study programmes last for three academic years (six semesters). After finishing the undergraduate study programme, the student earns 180 ECTS and the academic title of university bachelor (baccalaureus / baccalaurea) in engineering within the relative branch. Students finishing this level of studies meet the requirements for proceeding to the relative graduate study and can apply for admission at graduate university programmes or specialist professional graduate programmes, or enter the labour market.

 

Graduate study programme takes two academic years (four semesters). At the end of this study students acquire 120 ECTS credits as well as the academic title of master in engineering in the relative branch.

 

The graduate study programmes offer students the possibility of acquiring knowledge necessary for further education at the  postgraduate level (doctoral and specialist studies), i.e. for the formation of human resources that will be engaged in scientific research work in interdisciplinary maritime sciences.
